If you are reading this long past January, it isn’t too late.

January is a nice time to get in the habit of planning, decluttering, routines, time management skills and organizing - the beauty of it is, that you can make a fresh start at any time.

Each of these things are important to set yourself up for success in the coming year.

One thing ties them together and make them work - or not.

Do you know what it is?

What is the first word that pops into your head?

Is it FOCUS? I hope so.

If you want to "walk the walk", DO what you say you want to do this year instead of flounder around dreaming, planning and wishing, focus is the single most important tool to develop your time management skills that you will ever use.

It is a process.

You do need to do the decluttering - weeding out everything that will create mind mush (not to mention physical hardship and confusion).

And you definitely need to do the planning, you especially need to get your priorities straight, and weed again, anything that you can so that you have a few select goals to FOCUS on.

You need to make your plans a reality through habit and routine, taking small steps that add up into large ones.

And to accomplish any of it, you need to use your ability to FOCUS.

Sounds easier than it actually is. This may be the single hardest part.

A FRESH START THROUGH FOCUS

Building the ability to FOCUS is like building a muscle or a skill. It takes concentrated effort.

But after you have achieved the ability, everything gets easier after that, you can DO what you want to do with the new skill or strength.

Make it a point right now to sharpen your FOCUS skills. It is as simple as deciding to do it. Invest in a timer and a time management/day planner of some kind.

Create a few project blocks in your week, daily is even better.

Don’t overwhelm yourself, make the time pockets small enough that you can do them faithfully without danger of putting them off because.

And don’t make too many, overwhelm is the kiss of death.

FOCUS on a few key areas, one for each area of your life is fantastic.

Try one in business, one at home and one for yourself. It’s always better make a fresh start by easing into a new habit rather than to cannon ball – a big splash will almost never get the job done – but slow and steady will as long as you stay at it.

You will find one of the most helpful time management tools to be your timer - be sure to get one and set it so that you can remind yourself to get back on track, and you can make it easy to begin.

You can create a habit and soon you will find yourself doing it on autopilot.

Do this for yourself. Make a fresh start today.

And then let me know how much you have been able to accomplish. I would love to hear from you.
