Succeeding with your Goals and Resolutions

IT'S ALL ABOUT RESOLVE

Ever felt discouraged because you never stick to your resolutions or goals? And worse, it seems to be generally accepted that the majority of people don’t.

You can do it! It’s quite easy. All you need to do is resolve to resolve.

The most important step is choosing your resolution or goal.

Take the time to pinpoint what is pivotal in making your life better. Something that will give you incentive to continue as it grows. Something meaningful to you.

Try this…

Be grateful. Spend some time in solitude with a candle, a soothing bath, some relaxing music or what ever calms you.

Reflect on what gives you pleasure. What is in your life that makes it great.

What could you do to expand on these things. To give back. To make it better?

An example of this that popped into my head this morning was a resolve to remember how lucky I am to have my kids and not to waste any time that I have with them on this earth.

Sounds fairly normal but it is so easy to get lost in the day to day hussle and bussle, that we forget our gifts, and we forget how fleeting they are.

Have a fresh look at each one of them individually and think how lucky you are to have that person in your family. To have that person for your child.

When I thought about that, I was instantly awed that this child was my own. To nurture and love. How lucky can a person be?

Even if you have some difficulties, underneath, there is a bond unlike any other.

This year make a resolution to focus on your children as individuals. Support their strengths, help guide them with their weaknesses. Make it fun. Revel in the beauty that is your child. In the beauty that is your life.

Take a deep breath and really feel it. Resolve not to let it go. Resolve to remember.

Or you can work it backwards. What is nagging you. What do you KNOW you need to do but just haven’t been able to discipline yourself to do it. What is in your life that you want OUT!

A few common resolutions and goals in this category are…

Weight loss. As we all know, this one is common, especially after the holiday indulgences. It seems so hard, but guess what. It really isn’t. Once you resolve to do it, it gets quite easy after awhile. And the feeling of accomplishment as the pounds melt off, almost by themselves is matched by nothing – not even chocolate!

Relationships. Are you in one that you need to get out of? How are you going to do it. Decide to decide and take the steps that you need to take.

A negative attitude. That one sneaks up on us without us even knowing it. Try to take on a spectacular attitude for one day. Be grateful for the little things, don’t let them pass you by. See if your day is brighter. You may be surprised. You may find it one of the best resolutions you can make. And it may be the one that makes all the others take on a life of their own over the coming year.

Why do we bother making resolutions and goals anyway? We want to do better – we want to step up.

We want change.

We want to declutter negativity.

We want to colour our world with happiness.

It’s all good!

PUT THE RESOLVE BACK IN YOUR RESOLUTIONS

After you have decided what you would like to make your New Year’s Resolution, you need to stamp it with your own resolve.

Here are a few dictionary meanings for the words “resolve” and “resolutions” taken from the Oxford dictionary.

Resolution – 1. boldness and firmness of purpose. 2. a thing resolved on: an intention (New Year’s resolutions) 3. The act or instance of solving doubt or a problem or question (towards a resolution of the difficulty)

Resolve – 1. make up ones mind (resolve to do better) 2. cause to do this (events resolved him to leave) 3. solve, clear up, settle (doubt, argument, etc) 4. a firm mental intention or a resolution (made a resolve not to go) 5. resoluteness, steadfastness.

Resolve is your non negotiable. Resolve is your contract with yourself. Resolve is self discipline and self integrity.

Does it sound hard? It is sometimes. But it’s also grand.

This is how you get the work done that will make your dying day into one that will make you feel gratitude for having lived, instead of regret for the things you did not do, or say.

Lakota Sioux leader Crazy Horse made the famous quote - "Today is a good day to die.”

Luckily for any of you reading this, today is a good day to live.

It’s your life.

Take it by the horns and make it your life.

Dig in. Stick to it.

You can do it.

Be strong. Be focused.

Make the effort. Be resolved.

Do it long enough and it will become habit. And you can use that habit to continue to shape your life in a way that makes you shine.

Shining is not for angels only :0)
