A Home for Everything - The Heart of Organization

It doesn't take long for things to get out of hand if you don't have a home for everything. Organization goes to the birds.

Recently, I let my desk go to the birds.

Even though I know that if I just keep it up 5 minutes a day, and even better, put things away as I am finished with them, it will stay nice, I let it slide, big time.

So when I finally tackled "the pile" I found myself getting frustrated. I needed some organization help - fast!

I NEEDED TO CREATE A HOME FOR EVERYTHING

I was merely shuffling piles, and this is what happens with everything if you don't have a place to put things.

Imagine for a minute that you had no cupboards to put your dishes and food. No closets to put your clothes and belongings.

Your house would be one big pile.

And this is what happens on a smaller scale when we have no "home" for an item.

We dump it and plan to find a place for it later.

Too often, later becomes much later, and pile after pile leads to one very big pile, lots of mess and lots of frustration because we can't find anything.

HOME SWEET HOME

Surprisingly, most belongings fall within a few particular categories. Organization can be much easier than you think.

The amazing part is how far reaching the benefits are.

You will find yourself months later marveling at how much easier a task is because you knew exactly where to find the needed tools.

You will find yourself comparing things to before, when you didn't have a clue or had to go rifling through 6 piles to find what you needed.

You will heave a sigh of relief and feel secretly smug.

And you will find your self saving so much time and frustration, you will feel like a new person!

Knowing exactly where things are is so much better than spending time looking for things.

And it is so much better not to be tripping over piles and looking at piles and thinking about putting away piles!

It's funny, but for every "mini home" you create, your environment becomes more - homey.

More peace. More happiness.

Isn't that what it's all about?

HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT

It’s funny that often this is a step that we don’t take, because it can be the most fun.

Choosing pretty baskets or drawers, decorating boxes – painting something old to make it new – getting your creative juices flowing – that’s the fun part.

But it doesn’t have to take long, you can go as simple as you like.

At the moment I am using a shoe box for my own organizing tool kit. Someday I might graduate to a real kit or decorate the box with handyman items, it will be fun.

Don’t ever let the need for “proper” delay you, but there are many ways that you can make it a fun project if you want to go a step further.

Have a look around and see if there are any annoying piles that simply need a home of their own.

And give them one. It’s a great feeling!
